My original title was 'Contrasts: Iran Edition.' I was going to dwell on the juxtaposition between their political upheaval and Canada's tempest in a teapot.

It is unfortunate that freedom tends to cost human life. I don't know exactly how to put it in words in a way that's both sympathetic and true at the same time.

Part of me wants to urge Iranians to fight harder -- "the opportunity is now!" -- but another part of me feels guilty and ashamed that I'm not personally in (immediate) danger: what right do I have to meddle?

It is ironic that what we are seeing in Iran is such a powerful manifestation of a primal human ideology...but what invades the consciousness of the western world is still predominately images of hockey contracts and melodrama. Thanks for reiterating that contrast. Makes me wonder how much of the primal human ideology we have suppressed over a few generations of people who have never actually had to put serious thought into fact that the freedom to express oneself is usually only won at a price (at least this has been a major factor in our global narrative thus far).
