A Bold, Ambiguous Vision

It’s about preparing for the future. Since we don’t know what the future will bring, we can’t know exactly how to prepare.

What we can be sure of is that we’ll need to be creative, nimble, knowledgeable, open, adventurous, experienced…

We need to be ready to capitalize on emerging opportunities and challenges (ones that never existed before — which may be difficult to even recognize).

We need to be comfortable with ambiguity, complexity, uncertainty, and change, to make sense of those opportunities and challenges as they emerge, not after they’re explained.

That is, if we want to succeed and thrive in the future…

It’s a choice everyone can make. Organizations and communities that choose to cultivate those abilities will have a great advantage over those that don’t.

Of course, it’s possible to fail by being too innovative and open as well. It isn’t a question of either/or, it’s a matter of executing the right innovations at the right times.

Restraint becomes easier with familiarity. Managing it requires two things above and before all else: dialog and practice.

That’s all this is about: experimenting, learning, finding and making mistakes as fast as possible, discussing what we did wrong and what can be improved —before it actually counts – so change comes naturally.

Excerpted from the LdnBeta | About page — sort of a first draft (everything on that blog should be read as a draft) — which was published a moment ago.

My intention here is to keep working towards making the vision and mission more clear. If I’m just confusing people even more, comments are open.

By the way, the tongue-in-cheek title may have been a little self-indulgent (it’s a dig at all of the <strong> text) but a little humour does seem to help with these things, especially when they’re at risk of getting too grandiose.
