Sunday Music: Land of Talk

If there’s going to be a grunge renaissance, you won’t hear me complaining. First of all it’s a great tonic to all of the overproduced, overmarketed adult oriented rock (the same stuff that the original grunge scene came up through). And as the economy continues to worsen, we may find ourselves more in the mood for those strangely catchy-gloomy tunes that Nirvana mastered, casually played and sung from the heart, seemingly exposed but safened by irony, unafraid of sonic or spiritual dissonance…

All of this came to mind when I heard “Some Are Lakes,” the title track of Land of Talk‘s latest album. First time I ever heard (of) Land of Talk was a couple hours ago — on Kanye West’s blog, of all places. Here’s a live performance from their European tour:

As Exclaim! wrote, reviewing the band’s recent Toronto show at the Horseshoe, “Land of Talk are by no means a flashy band; in face; their performance was simplicity at best.”

Some Are Lakes came out in October and the Montreal-based band seems poised to really break (hopefully her vocal cord surgery goes well). Their Horseshoe performance was apparently well-represented by the hoi polloi of TO’s music scene. Singer-guitarist-songwriter Liz Powell’s affiliation with Broken Social Scene doesn’t hurt. …

Their profile at CBC Radio 3 is the best place to check them out.
