Personality Type

by Brian on 11-21-2008

According to Typealyzer my blog’s personality is INTP:

The logical and analytical type. They are especialy [sic] attuned to difficult creative and intellectual challenges and always look for something more complex to dig into. They are great at finding subtle connections between things and imagine far-reaching implications.

Not a very surprising result. I do these tests every once-in-awhile if I happen to stumble on something like this when I’m bored or especially self-absorbed. I’m always INTP. I’d be less surprised if my blood-type suddenly changed than if my personality did.

To quickly summarize, INTP is one of the Myers-Briggs personality types, based on the work of psychologist Carl Jung; it stands for Introvert (vs. Extrovert), Intuitive (vs. Sensor), Thinker (vs. Feeler), Perceiver (vs. Judger). Fellow INTP David Keirsey describes the type somewhat more artfully as The Architect.

I don’t fully buy into personality typologies, but at at least they tend to be more accurate and effective than reflexive folk psychologizing that might peg someone like me simply as “an introvert” or “a thinker.” (One of the reasons I’m not a great fan of Jung and Freud is that they made that kind of careless analysis popular.)

When I consistently and unambiguously test as an INTP it can be useful for explaining myself – first of all to myself, and also to show others that I didn’t just wake up one morning and decide to ”always look for something more complex to dig into,” but it’s simply something I continuously need to do, regardless of the situation (i.e. I can’t leave it at the door when I go to work, or to school, or to a party – though I might manage to keep it in my pocket for short periods of time, with some effort).

I’m not special in that regard — I mean, I’m not special just because I have personal qualities that I didn’t choose to have, which sometimes get in the way of stuff. Everybody has to deal with characteristics or motives that aren’t appropriate in every situation. What does make me a little bit special (along with everyone else with the same personality) is that the INTP is par excellence the personality that is least comfortable in social and institutional settings.

Logical, original, creative thinkers. Can become very excited about theories and ideas. Exceptionally capable and driven to turn theories into clear understandings. Highly value knowledge, competence and logic. Quiet and reserved, hard to get to know well. Individualistic, having no interest in leading or following others. [Personality Page]
