Jesse, your last point's very good -- never thought of that one.

I knocked-out season 1 last night. I am living in Baltimore. Just after finishing it I heard a bottle break on my leafy London street and for a few seconds I thought for sure it led to a tangled web of crime and conspiracy!

The Wire is indeed incredible television. That feeling you have at the end of season 1 where you feel as if you're living in Baltimore, that only increases. It may ebb in season 2, but stick it out, by 3 and 4 you will be asking yourself what world do you live in, and the answer will be B-more! Though do be careful, the emotional investment can climb to incredible heights, and that is dangerous in a show that is essentially tragedy. No matter where you put your love, your heart will be broken. Still, this is the modern equivalent of the Victorian novel set in the streets. Though to your last reference, if you were cynical about TV before, wait until after you're done The Wire. It sets the bar really high, perhaps so high that no other show can get close.
